  • Nice! Been waiting for a return to the Chicago firestorms, and can't wait for the Back to Plato thingy! The New Brunswick firestorm sounds crazy as well. I've experienced what I previously thought were large fires in Salmon Arm, BC, and Kelowna, BC 2003 (and almost every year since - sheesh!) I recall the flames coming over the hills, looking like a wall of flame blowing northward, toward us - they seemed huge, the way the Moon does when it first peers over the horizon, only to seem to shrink as it rises into the sky. We checked Google Earth to find-out they were still 2 km away - lol! We thought the flames appeared 200-300' high if the trees were about 60-100' tall, and spanned about half a km. The imagery from these old accounts are stupendously large compared to the fires I experienced, and still the flames seemed like they were way closer! We had to evacuate, and we witnessed people panicking and saw two car crashes on the way out of a town whose streets were packed with cars (33,000 evacuated) - I can only image the sheer panic of a true Firestorm!! I used to bike up the hills where the fire burned every summer, and it took years to regain ground cover, but with many thin strips of untouched forest amongst what looked like a pincushion of charred sticks - so weird, and pedaling up the steep hills at 2 km/hour, you got to really get a good look at the glacier-scarred landscape. So cool to have experienced something relevant to both topic in one place! We almost died bombing down that hillside toward a near straight-walled canyon when we skidded to a halt only about 8' from the sloping edge on bare rocks - yikes! (600' deep!) Can't wait for next week's episode! Also, SNAKES!
