  • Aloha, Randall. As a nearly 40 year resident of Maui, Hawai`i, I have done my best to respect, and even remotely understand a tiny bit of the traditions. This video has just caused a wonderful realization to dawn on me. The Makahiki season commenced on Nov 17 this year, when the rising of the Pleiades coincides with the setting sun, marking the celebrated return of Lonoikamakahiki, or Lono-of-the-Makahiki. This year the entire night was marked by the most extravagant lightning show over Haleakala. Lightning is a rare phenomena here, and this display was truly outrageous. After years of struggling to understand the meaning of the Akua (God ) Lono, the invaluable Hawaiian scholar, Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele put forth that Lono is the entire atmosphere, from the bottom of the sea to the edge of space, and all the weather phenomena that contains. What sense this makes that this marks the great catastrophic event! And what is midnight in Peru but sunset in Hawai`i? Mahalo, for your outstanding work.
